Choosing an oil tank: steel or fiberglass

Compare the actual equipment, the full quote and the financing terms. Here is what to ask before you decide.

Steel or fiberglass: compare the actual options

Choosing an oil tank is more than choosing a material. Start with the specific equipment being quoted and the proposed installation for your home. Mercer Fuels offers double bottom steel tank plans and also lists fiberglass tanks and pay-in-full options.

Ask a qualified installer to explain which models suit the intended location. A general comparison cannot decide whether a particular tank is appropriate for your property.

  • Double bottom steel: Compare the advertised inside and outside financing plans below, then confirm the model and installation for your home.
  • Fiberglass: Fiberglass oil tanks generally cost more than steel tanks. If your insurer covers a fiberglass tank for additional years, compare the long-term costs with your installer and insurer rather than assuming a longer coverage period.

How the steel tank financing plans compare

The current double bottom steel tank plans differ by term and by whether the tank is inside or outside. Each plan lists the same inclusions.

Double bottom steel oil tank financing plans
PlanTank locationMonthly
3 YearInside Tank$94/month
3 YearOutside Tank$110/month
2 YearInside Tank$129/month
2 YearOutside Tank$150/month

Every plan includes: Double Bottom Steel Tank, Installation by Insured Technician, Removal of Old Tank, All Taxes Included.

A shorter term shows a higher monthly figure, and outside tank plans show a higher figure than inside tank plans for the same term. Ask for the term, payment conditions and total amount payable before deciding.

Put the quotes beside each other

Ask each quote to identify the tank model, installation work and any work needed at the property. Check whether removal of the old tank and applicable taxes are included. Do not assume a fiberglass quote has the same inclusions as an advertised steel-tank plan.

Compare the full quoted cost as well as any monthly payment. If financing is being considered, ask for the term, payment conditions and total amount payable before deciding. A smaller monthly figure alone does not explain the whole arrangement.

Check warranty and home insurance separately

Ask for the written warranty for the specific tank and read its conditions with the installer. Then ask your home insurer what it requires for that model and installation.

A manufacturer's warranty and your home insurance are different things. Do not assume a warranty term means your insurer will cover the tank for the same period. Confirm the requirements for your own policy rather than relying on a general age rule.

Get advice for your property

You do not need to choose the material before asking for a quote. Tell us you are comparing steel and fiberglass, and share any requirements your insurer has provided. Ask a qualified professional to review equipment condition and installation suitability.
