Reading your heating oil tank gauge

What your gauge can tell you, what it cannot confirm, and how to talk with our local team about your next order.

Start with the gauge fitted to your tank

If your tank has a visible level gauge, its indicator and markings help you understand the level it is showing.

A gauge reading is not an exact measurement of litres remaining or a promise of how many days your oil will last.

How much oil is left? A quick guide in litres

For a standard 910 L heating oil tank, use these approximate amounts from Mercer Fuels as a handy reference. A full reading usually means around 850 L, rather than the tank's entire 910 L capacity.

A reading is useful information, not a delivery date

Tell the office what the gauge shows and when you read it. If you have noticed an unexpected change, mention that too. Do not calculate a guaranteed number of days from a single reading.

Ask Mercer Fuels when to arrange your next order for your home and current delivery schedule. There is no universal ordering level or safe waiting period given in this guide.

When the reading is unclear

If the gauge is hard to read or you are not confident it reflects the oil available, do not rely on it to postpone calling. Explain the uncertainty to the office and ask a qualified technician about equipment concerns. This guide does not diagnose a faulty gauge or explain how to repair it.

Choose how you want to manage ordering

If you prefer to place each order, you can order online for routine orders or call Mercer Fuels. Check Tank Reminders can help you remember to check the tank; a reminder does not measure the oil level for you.

Prefer not to place every oil order yourself?

Ask about automatic delivery. Mercer Fuels plans your deliveries using usage history and local weather patterns.
